Oakland (February 2, 2015) - Daylighted is thrilled to present the artwork of Julie Garner in a digital exhibition titled “Edge of Sky” at the Waterfront Hotel in Oakland. The exhibition of San Rafael artist Julie Garner’s artwork, titled “Edge of Sky,” will inaugurate Daylighted’s partnership with the Waterfront. An opening reception will be held at the hotel lobby on Thursday February 26th, 2015.
Julie Garner is a San Francisco-born, San Rafael-based artist who makes physically woven photographs that recast the relationships between people and architecture. Influenced by her roots in San Francisco, Garner uses urban structures as her artistic muse. Garner's meticulous and innovative work begins with taking multiple photographs from different vantage points. She then cuts, splices and weaves the pictures by hand, often aligning hundreds of sections precisely to control the degree of abstraction in her work.
Garner discusses her work:
"I believe the structures that surround us can either excite or dull our senses, intimidate or intrigue, dwarf or celebrate our presence. They also tell us about where we’ve come from, how we once lived and what we value."
She is a self-taught artist with a studio practice that merges her background in photography and textiles. Her practice addresses contemporary photography in a way that recalls the diffraction of Cubist painting, as well as Constructivist design. Her work portrays architecture and urban artifacts as characters that reveal aspects of humanity, reinterpreting them to draw the viewer into their details of texture and shape. In addition to urban landscapes, she is currently working on a series that reinterprets shop signage as diffracted abstract compositions.
Garner has exhibited widely in galleries and museums throughout California, including San Jose Museum of Quilt & Textile’s International TECHstyle Arts Biennial, Marin MOCA, Bolinas Museum, Los Angeles Center for Digital Arts and Berkeley Art Center. This is her first exhibition with Daylighted.
Waterfront hotel is part of the Joie de Vivre hotels brand, one of the largest collections of boutique properties in California. Since the opening of the iconic Phoenix Hotel in 1987, JDV hotels have been emblems of authenticity and imagination. Celebrating the spirit of Jack London Square, Waterfront Hotel blends festive, nautical décor with the unique atmosphere of the Oakland waterfront.
Waterfront Hotel reached out to Daylighted to promote the local art community and give its guests a uniquely Bay Area experience. Julie Garner’s artwork — which combines restless vision with a mix of traditional and non-traditional processes — is a great match for Waterfront's spirit and esthetic.
