King of the River by Gill Bustamante

Gill Bustamante

Forest Row, EAST SUSSEX - United Kingdom

I am an artist based in Sussex, England and I paint large landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas. My painting style is not always easy to define but has elements of abstract, Impressionist, Expressionist and possibly some Art-Nouveau.

Although I have a fine art degree in sculpture (acquired at Brighton in 1983), I am largely self-taught as a painter. For many year’s I painted animal portraits but finally realised I was having to repress my urge to experiment a bit too much as people did not seem to appreciate their Labrador being visually experimented with. So in the year 2012, I stopped painting commissions altogether and set myself free to try new techniques and painting styles and on large canvases so that I would have more room to play. I also took up walking in the country and painting from memory. This allows my impressions of a place to come out on the canvas in strange and interesting ways.

Artist statement

The aim I have when painting is to create art that hints at better times and places. I dream that one day I may paint a masterpiece that is so perfect I could disappear into it. If you have ever set up an aquarium or rabbit run with fixtures and toys for your pets to enjoy, you will know the satisfaction there is of creating a space for them that will, you hope, keep them happy. When I paint, I am attempting to do the same for the animals or people I paint into my spaces as well as for the viewer.

Local shows

I show my artwork from home by appointment. Email me to arrange.
