Intersecting Planes by Laurie Close

Laurie Close

Pleasanton, CALIFORNIA - United States

Laurie Close grew up in California where she received a Bachelors in Fine Art at San Jose State. She graduated from the MFA program from Pratt Institute in 2002. She's now back in the San Francisco Bay Area painting and teaching. She has shown in such places as The Painting Center in New York City and Collector in Berkeley, California.

Her work investigates notions of depth and space as it pertains to the painted surface. There is a dependency on opposing positions finding the right balance, a struggle between order and chaos. Hard edges and flat space is met with atmospheric illusion. By challenging the visual structure tension is created. Uncertainty is embraced to transcend to openness.

Artist statement

Color, pattern and texture inspire my painting. Over time I've developed a language as a painter. I’m constantly playing with the idea of flat space vs. depth. How veils of color can obscure or reveal what’s underneath. I want to show what paint can do on the surface.
