UNDER THE SPELL by TimMckenna

TimMckenna

Punaauia, TAHITI - French Polynesia

Description

Tim McKenna is fascinated by nature, its spectacular displays of fury or harmony and its moments of sheer power or fragile perfection. His photography is inspired by the magic conjured up when perfect light filters into the wild elements or into some great sporting exploit.
Born in Sydney in 1968 he grew up on the south west coast of France before returning to Australia to continue his studies. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queensland University, he devoted himself fulltime to his twin passions: the ocean and photography.
With the increase in popularity of surf and similar 'riding' sports, Tim soon found himself playing in different arenas, away from his beloved ocean, pioneering new heli-snowboard and ski destinations such as the Caucasus, Ouzbekistan, Kamchatka or Mongolia or inland tracks and deserts for motocross. He was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest names in these sports ( Laird Hamilton, Andy Irons, Jean-Michel Bayle, Sebastien Tortelli , Jason Polakow, Robert Teriitehau, Parks Bonifay, Ludovic Strohl, Anne-Caroline Chausson, Martin Vari, Guerlin Chicherit, etc) Some of his images have become iconic in these various sports.

Tim is a nomad at heart, travelling the globe for the last twenty five years. His work can be found in numerous advertising campaigns, books and magazines. Teahupoo, Tahiti's Mythical Wave is the first of a series of books.

Capturing the grace and the power of nature is his main goal but it is the poetic note infused into his imagery that has made him a leading figure in sports and travel photography. He is constantly searching for those elusive glimpses of perfection when nature reveals its force and beauty, reminding us of the rare, fragile state of our environment.

His first visit to French Polynesia in 1986 resulted in love at first sight. The luxuriant beauty of the landscape, the richness of the culture combined with the charm of the people and perfect waves all year round made him finally decide to settle therewith his family. Although now based on the island of Tahiti itself, he still tours the world but has principally assigned himself the task of capturing and transmitting the magic of Polynesian life.
