Leah Tumerman
Description
Leah Tumerman is on the trail of a story, be it hers, yours, the story of The City, the stories of memory & nostalgia, or the stories of dreams. Working with highly pigmented acrylics, Leah applies colorful under-paintings, watching for the emergence of subject. She delights in the implied relationship between forms based on their physical posture and placement alone, and with drawing materials, edits towards an oblique finish. Using playful symbolism and a touch of make believe, the details speak to notions of sisterhood and communalism, but also whisper of loneliness. Leah explores ‘the work’ of being a woman, striving to create scenarios which connect and include. She riffs on the notion of inclusion itself, employing metaphor towards a poetic understanding of intersectionality.
Leah Tumerman studied visual art and creative writing with both Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She currently resides and creates art in Oakland, CA.
