James Long

New York - United States

James Long, b. 1953 American of Cape Verdean descendant
James received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. He attended Kansas City Art Institute, Parsons School of Design, Pratt University, and the Fashion Institute of Technology in Paris. After a decade as an educator in NYC’s design schools he established Studio James Long. Studio James Long works on site-specific installations using light, shadow, and fog, which have garnered awards from juried competitions in the US, Canada and Spain. This evolution of competition proposals has recently made way for more artistic expression combining collage, photography, and digital imagery, often featuring mannequins in portraiture: figurative and scenic stills. James lives and works in New York City.

Artist statement

Desire to do anything begins with an idea, an exploration derived from observation. Inspiration for my work is damaged or neglected materials: combined with photography, used as a blank canvas, allowing creative self-expression to take shape. In life there are inherent imperfections the most critical point in composition is to know when to stop. What is realized is almost always accidental. We do not have absolute control; we use what we have to imagine what we want to do and what we want to be.
