A Place Where We Can Be Ourselves

A friend donated canvasses to me from an artist friend of hers who passed away. One of the pieces I made was, "A Place Where We Can Be Ourselves". This piece to me signifies the biggest unity to me because it represents the artist friend whose canvas it was originally and his partner uniting finally in the afterlife after being condemned by society for who they were in this life. The artist's partner that was stabbed to death for being queer. When he died he decided to rob a bank for a minimal amount so he would go to prison instead of becoming homeless. Once released from prison he decided to live out the rest of his days as a her. She entered the VA system and lived out the rest of her life as an artist in Milwaukee, WI. The piece itself is a giant ode to this artist and their partner finally uniting in a place where they can be themselves.
