The artist represented himself reading in a place removed from the world, in the middle of the tropical forest. The stagnant water of the dead arm of a river, the dappled sky, the exuberant nature in a whole swatch of greens, the rare silent witnesses: there is nothing here to disturb the tranquility of this solitary reading. Only the guardian of this "lost paradise", a crocodile on whose back the reader is lying, surprises, worries or amuses.

If we pay attention, we will notice that the book - which gives its title to the painting - is the novel by Garcia-Marquez emblematic of "magic realism", inspiration that runs through several works by the painter.
