As the “Output” series progresses, the individual elements become less important than the interrelated composition as a whole. As the drawing becomes more diffuse, repetition, the grid, and spatial patterning become more evident.
"Drawn with a very fine felt-tip pen, this ongoing series of miniatures, each a cluster of dozens of interrelated elements, pulls the viewer into an endlessly detailed cosmology of form. These pieces are improvisations, finished in one sitting, without any sketches or corrections. The artist enters a trance to allow the subconscious to express itself, a technique similar to the “automatic drawing” of the Surrealists. The forms are influenced by Gwazda’s interest in petroglyphs, early writing systems, and linguistics, as well as data visualizations from the biological sciences, particle physics, and mathematics."
Farley Gwazda is an artist, gallerist, curator, and educator who lives and works in Berkeley, CA.
