City Exposed, Mike Kepka

City Exposed is an Emmy Award Winning visual column by San Francisco Chronicle photojournalist Mike Kepka. Set with the city as his playground, Kepka looks to tell stories about regular people living everyday life.

"I do it because I care about these people," Kepka said. "Often people just write them off because they've been branded as too quirky and too strange. Sometimes they're celebrities and sometimes it's just a guy with stuffed animals in his garage. They are all a part of my family. " For the past six years Kepka has set out to tell stories about people that others would overlook. With 300+ stories complete, it's a pretty big family of people, he said.

"I'm not telling stories about buildings falling or earthquakes happening, this is a story about the guy that sweeps the sidewalks on Potrero Hill, or the guy that blows up balloons at Fisherman's Warf," he said. "These are stories about people you might know, and others you should know about."
