Mixed media on canvas
Getting the viewer involved with the painting has been one of my tenets since I began painting. Painting to me is like life, built up layer by layer. By adding washes of color, collage, personal symbols, and hidden drawings one looks deeper and becomes more aware. There is always 'something else' to find. Utilizing both camera and journal while traveling, sites, impressions and remembrances, often including found objects, are collected in journals. These may become finished works but are often combined with literary references, music, and current events while working in the studio to develop mixed media paintings. Content is paramount in my paintings whether referenced thru masks, figures, narratives or color, whether hidden or overt. I enjoy creating a whole from the chaos, joining representational and abstract form, contrasting myth with reality. Each painting to me is a state of mind, a piece of time that reflects the contemporary time in which we live.
