Virgil, Beatrice, Harpy

During her 2011 Recology residency, Niki Ulehla created a cast of puppets for a production based on Dante’s Inferno. Ulehla, who studied puppetry in the Czech Republic, carved many of the puppets from scavenged wood. She also created many of the characters that Dante and Virgil encounter during their descent into hell from surprising materials including mannequin heads and rubber gloves.

The Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco is a one-of-a-kind program established in 1990 to encourage the conservation of natural resources and instill a greater appreciation for the environment and art in children and adults.
